This was the question that framed a design task and presentation as part of the Domain recruitment process. The following is a showcase of some of that response which showed design thinking and creativity within a very short timeframe to reveal instincts and capabilities.

The Friction

Traditional faceted search is binary and assumes rational behaviour. Property purchases are highly emotional and full of unstated trade-offs.

The Pivot

NLP lets users search deeper instantly, but risks filtering out 'close to perfect' near matches. AI, through the contextual understanding of listings must step in to help people understand their compromise.

Starting a Query

The initial query sets the broad search scope from which we encourage people to explore.

Onboarding the Change

Search placeholders show example natural language queries to demonstrate what is now possible vs form-based search

B

Reducing Friction

'Quick select' controls allow searcher to auto-update their query (e.g. from "2br home" to "BUY a 2br home"

C

Guiding & Inspiring

Personalised Dynamic Suggestions offer short cuts to expected high inventory parameters and lead away from niche or null results

On Target Matching

We default to providing the user their exact searched scope.

Ease of Refinement

The search box remains prominent to allow for easy access refinement and to re-confirm the current criteria

B

Increasing Flexibility

AI affords Relevance as a new sorting option, fueled by the new user preference graph

C

Protecting Revenue

Platinum listings lead the 'Featured' (default) sorting method, maintaining visibility and value for agents

D

Encouraging Exploration

[OFF-SCREEN] Close Matches, the smart recommendation engine is cross promoted after delivering On Target results

Encouraging Exploration with Close Match

Close match results reveal options that exist when on search parameter is adjusted.

Deliver Transparency

Close match results clearly state their variance from the search. e.g. in a nearby suburb or an extra bedroom or slightly out of budget

B

Protecting Revenue

Two Premium listings of those that qualify are promoted into top position, providing new value to Platinum subscribers

C

Uncover Possibility

Close Match Invitations suggest adjustments to search parameters and display the impact of that change. This example shows the expanded view when opened by the user

D

Low-Friction Adjustment

A single click adds the adjustment to the search query and reloads new On-Target results and new Platinum listing impressions

Introducing Serendipity.

'Surprise Me' results stretch the user intent into unexpected areas outside of their scope, challenging their preconceptions and opening up possibility

Setting the Context

These matches are deliberately designed to stretch the imagination and are not what the searcher has specifically requested. This context is key to explaining the variance

B

Extrapolating Intent

Results map the contextual intent of a query rather than its literal criteria to non-obvious out of scope listings. e.g. Quiet/Relaxation delivered by ocean views at elevation

C

Thinking Outside the Box

The goal is key and assumptions should be challenged. A request for a 3 bedroom home may suggest smaller, more affordable options with room to extend or renovate

D

Increasing Membership

Surprise Me results are scarce (e.g. 1-6 results max) and disappear on refresh. Favouriting becomes more valuable which is a member benefit

Adjusting a Query

We minimise friction in adjusting queries to drive search frequency and increase Platinum listing visibility for revenue.

Short-cutting the Process

Dynamic Facets (e.g. bedroom count, suburb) are clickable, revealing contextual prompts to adjust rather than resubmit a query

B

A Clean Slate

A full text replacement with keyboard and microphone entry, like the initial query, is available at all times

C

Dynamic Suggestions

Suggestions are contextual to the facet type and may be numerical, a single selection or multi-selection. They may be refining or probative (e.g. what type of quiet?)
